UpToDate: November Resource of the Month

UpToDate, licensed and funded by the UAB Health System, is an evidence-based clinical information tool that contains more than 76,000 pages of peer-reviewed text, graphics, calculators, links to MEDLINE abstracts, more than 254,000 references, a drug database, and free patient information resources.  The UpToDate editors review more than 400 journals to provide evidence-based information.  More than 7,400 topics in 13 specialties are covered in UpToDate which also includes treatment recommendations based on the best medical evidence.  Specialties include:

  • adult primary care and internal medicine
  • cardiovascular medicine
  • endocrinology and diabetes
  • family medicine
  • gastroenterology and hepatology
  • hematology
  • infectious diseases
  • nephrology and hypertension
  • obstetrics, gynecology, and women’s health
  • oncology
  • pediatrics
  • pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine
  • rheumatology

Clinicians can use UpToDate on the Web, their desktop computer, or a PDA.  View a demo of UpToDate here.  Be sure to check out the user manual as well.

*Please note: UpToDate is only accessible from computers in UAB facilities that are connected to the UAB network or through the medical staff intranet site.  The current CD-ROM version is also available on one standalone computer in the library.

PubMed Single Citation Matcher: June Resource of the Month

Use PubMed’s Single Citation Matcher to:

  • verify a citation
  • find a specific or known article
  • find an volume or issue of a journal
  • generate a bibliography of an author’s works

Sometimes, just a few significant words from the title will find the article you need. Enter as little or as much information as you know, such as:

  • journal name, volume, or issue number
  • date
  • page numbers
  • words in the title
  • author(s) name

Florence Nightingale Letters: May Resource of the Month

Did you know the UAB Historical Collections contains original Florence Nightingale letters?

The letters range in date from 1853 to 1893 while the majority are from the 1860s to 1880s. The letters generally deal with Nightingale’s war relief charities during the Franco-Prussian War and her sanitation work in India.

The 51 letters and 2 portraits have been digitized and are available through the UAB Digital Collections. Each digitized letter contains a digital image and transcript of the letter as well as pdf functionality so you can zoom in to see it more closely.

Current Protocols: April Resource of the Month

The Current Protocols series from Wiley InterScience consists of step-by-step instruction manuals for basic to advanced laboratory procedures and protocols. Titles in the Current Protocols series are updated each quarter to ensure that they are always up-to-date and contain the newest information available. Each title is written and peer-reviewed by experts in the respective fields.
Features of Current Protocols include:

  • annotations pointing to special considerations, tips, and optional procedures
  • alternate and support protocols to accommodate differences in equipment and intended results
  • a list of materials needed for each protocol
  • tables and figures to clarify complex procedures
