MedlinePlus for Consumer Health
By Pat Higginbottom | July 30, 2008
If you need to direct patients to an online source for health information I would suggest MedlinePlus. According to their About page:
MedlinePlus will direct you to information to help answer health questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Preformulated MEDLINE searches are included in MedlinePlus and give easy access to medical journal articles. MedlinePlus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and latest health news.
This site is easy to use and covers all common health conditions and many less common. Other features include:
- interactive tutorials
- surgical videos
- health news
- health information in over 40 languages
This site is freely available and all links are evaluated and recommended by the National Library of Medicine. It is a great tool to have as you see patients.

AAMC tool for Finances
By Pat Higginbottom | June 18, 2008
This looks like a helpful tool. I’ll add to the del.icio.us links.
The AAMC has launched a new debt management initiative called FIRST for Medical Education. FIRST offers a full range of financial information, resources, services, and tools for applicants, medical school students, residents, advisors, and financial aid officers (FAOs). The program, developed with input from the AAMC Group on Student Affairs Committee on Student Financial Assistance and the Organization of Student Representatives, aims to help medical school students expand their financial literacy, make smart decisions about student loans, and manage their student debt wisely.
The FIRST program offers a Web site with a number of resources including:
“First Facts,” short, informational sheets on a variety of financial aid related topics; an FAO Lender Assessment Tool for financial aid administrators to sort survey data based on loan industry-related criteria in order to compare various loan programs; and a new Economic Hardship Deferment Calculator for medical students and residents to estimate eligibility for deferment. Future phases of FIRST will include streaming video, podcasts, a comprehensive debt management curriculum and additional Web-based tools.

Interactive Anatomy Resources
By Pat Higginbottom | May 28, 2008
We had a question about interactive anatomy resources. We currently license Anatomy.TV. (Now linked from the left sidebar.)
This is the Primal Pictures Product, although you sometimes see it called Primal Pictures when licensed through another vendor. There is a limited number of seats that can be used at the same time, so please log out when finished and let us know if you have trouble getting in.
We’d be interested in feedback on these resources.

EXAM MASTER Updated
By Pat Higginbottom | February 20, 2008
The USMLE Step 1 board prep area of EXAM MASTER has been “fine-tuned to better represent that board exam, and uses a content blueprint very similar to the actual exam.”
The USMLE Step 1 practice exam is being updated to include more questions in the areas of respiratory care and GI.
