April 13th, 2011 by Pat | No Comments | Filed in Class of 2010, Class of 2011, Class of 2012, Class of 2013, Class of 2014

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with this park project in Birmingham.  At just over 1,100 acres Red Mountain Park will be a a huge asset to the City of Birmingham and to the state.  Right now we’re hoping for a soft opening in late 2011 or early 2012 with more phases to come.  Find out more on the Red Mountain Park website.   Since the park isn’t open to visitors I would like to invite you to a public hike, this Sunday, April 17th at 2 pm.  Details are below.  Why do I bring this up here?  Because I serve on the Board of the Friends of Red Mountain Park and I have seen several medical students out at other events.  Also we’ve worked with the Wilderness Medicine Interest Group on work days in the past.  Hope to see you there!

Time: All tours depart at 2pm.  Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes before the tour departs to sign waiver forms and meet your guides.

Location: Meet at the cul-de-sac at the end of Frankfurt Drive. Frankfurt is off of Lakeshore Parkway.  Heading West on Lakeshore from I-65, Frankfurt Drive is 1.4 miles past its intersection with West Oxmoor Rd (3rd right turn and there is a traffic light; please see map above). Across the street from the Frankfurt turn is a small shopping center with a Subway and nail salon. Park along Frankfurt. [View on Google Maps].

I have to say that I am always impressed by the art work presented in the annual SOM art show.  It is very interesting how intellect and creativity fit together.    Details on the show and reception are below.  Hope to see you there and congratulations to the winners!

The 11th Annual School of Medicine Art Show is on display in the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences through May 20, 2011. The 2011 Art Show drew 33 entries in a variety of disciplines: photographs, paintings, drawings, three dimensional constructs and mixed-media creations. The show, which examines the link between art and medicine with submissions from UAB faculty, residents and medical students, is presented by the Alabama chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national honor society for medical school students, and the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences.

Please join us for a reception celebrating the artists:

Thursday, February 24, 2011, 4:00 – 6:00pm
Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences
third floor of UAB Lister Hill Library
1700 University Boulevard, Birmingham

Winners of this competitive art show will be announced. A selection of fantastic art work will be available through a silent auction during the reception. And refreshments will be served.

Co-sponsored by the Alabama Alpha Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha
