EndNote now offers a version of their software for iPad available for $9.99 from the  App Store.  Use EndNote for iPad by itself or sync with EndNote Web to use the app in conjunction with your other EndNote products.  If you have EndNote software on your computer, you can sync both the desktop library and the app using your EndNote Web account.  Once you have signed in using your EndNote Web account (or created one), your EndNote Web references and groups will automatically sync with the EndNote App:

EndNote for iPad also allows you to export PubMed records directly from the in-app browser.  Watch this short video on YouTube to learn how.  The video also demonstrates how to attach PDFs to an EndNote record and how to read and annotate those PDFs.  You can even import PDF’s from your Dropbox account into your EndNote for iPad app.

Scopus has a nice analyze results tool that offers a way to see which journals have published on your topic.

Recently, Biomed Central has announced a new Journal Selector that will allow you to enter an abstract or description of their research and the Journal Selector provides a list of relevant open access journals from BioMed Central, Chemistry Central and Springer Open.  Learn more here.

ReadCube is a free app for Windows and Mac computers developed to help researchers quickly navigate research literature, and organize their PDFS to facilitate their writing.  (Similar free tools include Zotero and Mendeley Desktop.)

Use ReadCube to organize your PDF Collection. Import a file of PDFs and ReadCube will fetch the metadata from PubMed and Google Scholar for the citations.  Export individual or groups of citations directly to EndNote (or as a RIS file for other managers, like Zotero) to create bibliographies.

You can highlight, annotate, and tag  each PDF in your PDF library.  These comments are fully searchable.

Search PubMed and/or Google Scholar directly in ReadCube.  Download the articles (if free or licensed by UAB) in one click. Be sure to set your preferences to UAB. Note the links to related articles and forward citations in the record in your library.

Other features include personalized article recommendations based on the PDFs in your library and the ability to automatically find supplemental material for a growing number of articles.

ReadCube is snazzy and simple to use. It seemed to find bibliographic information for most of the articles I added quite quickly and working with PDFS was straightforward and simple. There are other reference managers available that have similar functions available. Similar products you may want to review, depending on your needs, include:

Here are more strategies for better PubMed searches.

•  The UAB Archives will be closed to public access as of March 1^st.  It will be reopened this summer once the collection has been moved to the Historical Collections area on the 3^rd floor of the library.
• The classroom is not available during construction.  All Express Training Classes will be held in the Fletcher Room. (Just ask at the Hub.)
• There will be no access to the ground floor at all until at least mid-summer. If you like to study on the ground floor, you will need to find a new favorite spot. The second floor is quiet and additional carrels and tables will be placed on the first floor.
• The journals from 1995 -forward, many of which are available online,  will be moved to another UAB location, to be determined. Our Document Delivery Staff hope to deliver the article to you electronically within 24 hours.  To request an article, please fill out an ILLIAD request: https://uablh.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html  (one time sign up is required.)  The $10.00 fee will be waived for faculty, staff and students of UAB when the request is filled.  If you need an entire issue, let us know on your request, and it will be brought to the library.  More information will be provided as this transition progresses.

Useful features include the familiar UAB Article Linker button for accessing PDFs, a clinical search mode, a place to set aside favorites, and the unique Grapherence tool which visually displays article bibliographies and cites!

Grapherence™ is Unbound’s unique new interactive visual search tool that graphically represents the influence and interrelationships among journal articles.  See forward cites to the given article.  Note that these forward cites are citations in PubMed Central (PMC). Citation counts in Scopus and Google Scholar will be more inclusive.

Tap the Grapherence™ button within a citation to see how that article is related to others.Click on the ? icon to learn to interpret the graph.
